You’re walking down the pet aisle in your favorite supermarket or the treat aisle of your local pet store. You see your dog’s favorite treats on the shelf, reach for a bag and head for the checkout.
Little do you know, those chicken tender treats you just grabbed can turn out to be fatal for your dog.
The United States Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning that chicken treats from China care causing dogs to become sick and in some cases have resulted in fatalities. The treats in question are generally marketed as “chicken strips” or “chicken tenders.”
Those treats may look tasty in their packaging, but without a careful look at the label you may not even know they have been imported from China, which is why looking at the label is so important.
Pet owners who have fed their dogs these treats have reported their pets have suffered from vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy and more frequent urination due to increased water intake. In more serious cases issues such as kidney failure and blood sugar issues have been noticed.
While there has been no recall notice issued by the FDA, our best advice again is to read the label on your pet’s treats. If you have any questions about the origin of the treats, ask.
